The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new Aadhaar Face Authentication Software Development Kit (SDK) along with a dedicated Face Authentication Sandbox. The announcement was made during the Global Fintech Fest 2026.
The new tools are intended to make Aadhaar-based face authentication easier for banks, fintech companies, insurance providers, government organisations and other authorised entities to integrate into their digital applications.
What Is the Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK?
The Aadhaar Face Authentication SDK is a ready-to-integrate software package that allows eligible organisations to add UIDAI’s face authentication facility directly to their mobile applications.
The SDK is designed for both Android and iOS applications. This means that customers can potentially complete the Aadhaar face authentication process within the same banking, insurance, brokerage or other service application they are already using.
Earlier, organisations using Aadhaar face authentication generally depended on the Aadhaar FaceRD application as part of the authentication process. The new SDK is designed to reduce this dependence and provide a more integrated user journey.

How the New Face Authentication System Works
Under the new approach, an organisation can integrate UIDAI’s face authentication functionality into its own authorised mobile application.
For example, a customer using a participating banking or financial-services app could complete the required Aadhaar face authentication without having to leave that application and open another app.
This can make digital onboarding less complicated, particularly for services that require Aadhaar authentication as part of customer verification.
The SDK also incorporates AI and machine-learning based liveness detection and anti-spoofing features. These technologies are designed to help determine whether the authentication attempt is coming from a real person rather than an artificial representation such as a photograph.
What Is the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox?
Along with the SDK, UIDAI has launched a controlled testing environment known as the Aadhaar Face Authentication Sandbox.
The Sandbox is intended for developers and quality-assurance teams that need to test the authentication process before an organisation moves to production.
It allows organisations to examine different parts of the authentication journey, including:

UIDAI’s face authentication technology uses AI/ML-based mechanisms for liveness detection and anti-spoofing.
Liveness detection is intended to determine whether the person attempting authentication is physically present rather than using an artificial representation. Anti-spoofing measures add another layer of protection against attempts to manipulate the biometric verification process.
The new SDK also supports secure handling and encryption of authentication-related information.
Aadhaar Face Authentication Has Been in Use Since 2021
UIDAI’s indigenous face authentication technology was originally introduced in 2021.
According to UIDAI, the system has now processed more than 500 crore authentication transactions and has been adopted by nearly 200 organisations. These include government departments, banks, NBFCs, telecom operators, brokerage firms and other entities.
The technology also received the Prime Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Administration 2023 in the Innovation category.
What Changes for Aadhaar Users?
The most noticeable change for users is the possibility of completing face authentication within the application of the organisation providing the service.
Previously, the Aadhaar FaceRD app could be required as part of the authentication process. With the new SDK, participating organisations can integrate the required functionality into their own Android or iOS applications.
This could reduce the number of apps users need during digital onboarding and make the authentication process more integrated.
However, the availability of the feature will depend on whether an organisation has adopted the new SDK and is authorised to use Aadhaar authentication services.
