SASSA Child Grant Online Application Process (if parents passed away)

Registration process for a child grant when both parents have passed away in South Africa. It’s framed as guidance, taking official details with practical clarity and steps.

SASSA Child Grant Online Application Process (Orphan Child)

Losing both parents is overwhelming, especially when you need to ensure a child’s future. If you’re stepping up as a guardian or relative, looking after an orphaned child, South Africa offers financial support through the Child Support Grant (with orphan top-up) or the Foster Child Grant, depending on the situation.

I’m here explaining to you everything step by step, so you know exactly how to register and what documents will you need.

Deciding Which Child Grant to Apply For

1. Child Support Grant + Orphan Top-Up

  • This is for children under 18 whose parents have passed away.
  • Relatives or caregivers can apply for a Child Support Grant (CSG) plus an additional orphan top-up (additional funds per child).

2. Foster Child Grant

  • If the child is legally placed in your care by a court order, the Foster Child Grant applies.
  • This is separate and usually higher than the standard CSG.

Step-by-Step Registration Process

A. Complete the Essential Documents

Depending on whether you’re registering for the CSG or Foster Child Grant, you’ll need:

For Both Grants you’ll need:

  • Child’s birth certificate
  • Death certificates of both parents (to qualify as an orphan)
  • Your identity document (ID) is must
  • Proof of your relationship with the child (affidavits, community letters) if not a court-appointed guardian proof.

Additional for Foster Child Grant:

  • A court order confirming placement of the child in your care.

When Documents Are Missing:

  • You’ll need to fill a SASSA affidavit in front of a Commissioner of Oaths (not SASSA staff)
  • Provide a sworn statement from a community figure (e.g., social worker, councillor, school principal) vouching for your relationship to the child
  • Submit proof of application to Home Affairs if you’re waiting on an ID or birth certificate.

B. Visiting Your Nearest SASSA Office

  1. Visit your nearest SASSA office.
  2. Bring all documentation as said above, originals plus photocopies.
  3. Now complete the application form in front of a SASSA officer.
  4. Submit your application (no fee required).

Approval Process

  • It may take up to three months for your application to be reviewed, depending on the workload.
  • If approved, you’ll receive backdated payment since the child was placed in your care (Foster Grant) or when the orphan status was confirmed (CSG Top-Up).
  • A receipt will be issued, keep it safe with you.

If Your Application Is Not Approved

  • In this case SASSA will give you a written explanation for the refusal.
  • You have the right to appeal (within 90 days of receiving the refusal notice) to the Minister of Social Development.

Fixing Refusal Issue

The grant is reviewed every two years, and SASSA will notify you three months before the review is due. Life certificate is needed annually if payments go to bank accounts.

The grant can be suspended or lapses if:

  • The child or caregiver passes away.
  • The child is placed in a state institution.
  • You fail to claim the grant for three consecutive months.
  • The child is no longer in your care.
