How to Recover Your Illegally Deducted SASSA Grant

Have you noticed that your SASSA grant payment is short of the full amount? You’re not alone. Many beneficiaries across South Africa are struggling with money being taken from their grants for funeral policies or services they never agreed to.

The truth is, this is not allowed, and SASSA has already raised concerns about these illegal deductions. In this guide, know what the law actually says, how to report the problem, and the exact steps you can take to recover your money.

How to Get Your SASSA Grant Money Back After Illegal Deductions

These days, some SASSA beneficiaries have found less money in their accounts than expected because of deductions they never agreed to. It’s frustrating, and unfair. The good news? You’re not at fault, and SASSA has pointed the way to reclaim what’s yours.

What’s Going On! and What SASSA Says

SASSA has received many complaints about unauthorized deductions from grants, often linked to funeral policies or insurance schemes that people didn’t consent to. Some of the victims innocently believed that this is SASSA’s instructions and these companies are working with SASSA. But SASSA CEO Themba Matlou made it clear: “Your grant belongs to you, and we have no right to take it away without your consent.”

What the Law Actually Allows

In South Africa, legally, only one type of deduction is permitted each month, and that’s for a funeral policy, capped at 10% of your grant value. This must be with your clear and recorded consent (either in writing or electronically). Child-related and temporary disability grants are fully protected and should never have any deductions.

What You Should Do Right Now

1. Check your bank statement carefully after your grant pays out. If any amount is missing, take notice.

2. Go to your nearest SASSA office along with your ID and the bank proof showing the deducted money. File a formal complaint.

3. Alternatively, send an SMS to 34548 with the following:

  • Your ID number
  • Name of the insurer or service provider
  • Explain that you didn’t authorize the deduction

4. Contact the insurer directly, tell them the policy wasn’t authorized and ask them to cancel immediately.

5. Follow up regularly to make sure your case is being processed, and request your money back where possible.

How SASSA Will Help You

Once you report the issue, SASSA will raise an investigation and can help stop any further deductions. Cases with no genuine consent may even be referred to the police for fraud investigation.

You have legal rights. If money has been deducted from your grant without your permission, you should take immediate action. Whether it’s a quick SMS, a visit to SASSA, or a call to your insurer, you can protect what’s yours by law, and SASSA is firmly on your side.
